How about this:

1) Commenter UX leads to an standard anonymous post and a notification thereof to the original author – including the new anonymous post's secret link. The anonymous post contains a link back to the initial public post.

2) Upon receiving the author notification, the original author can use (1) to converse against the anonymous post created in (1), resulting in a second anonymous post, and a notification to the author of the previous. It also results in a “next” link (to the new anonymous post) in the previous anonymous post, and a “previous” link in the new anonymous post – setting up a situation akin to the “<—– Older”/“Newer —->” paging at the button of read.write.as pages.

The above results in a “conversation chain” that can grow – and remain private – indefinitely.

3) Each post in the conversation chain also contain controls for the conversers to mark/make the chain public. If and only if both do so, the conservation chain is made public by prepending it to conversations.write.as. (Perhaps either converser can choose to make the chain private again “unchecking” that publicizing control?)

In toto, conversations thusly created and made public “stand as a work in itself” in conversations.write.as – the first post of each conversation linking back to an initial post in read.write.as.
