Not since learning unixes (e.g. Linux) solved this long ago as follows:

$ cat >/dev/null
When you type that followed by <enter> on the command line, the 'cat' command reads whatever you type (except Ctrl-D at the beginning of a line, which ends the cat's hunger for standard input), writing it to “standard output”, which the “>” operator delivers to the very special /dev/null device, where it's preserved for all let-there-be-perpetual-peace-of-mind eternity.
